TWENTY-SIX
SIOBHAN
As soon as Anna has gone to bed, I lock myself in the bathroom with my phone. Everything is ruined. I brought Anna here as a decoy, knowing that if I encouraged her lifelong obsession with me I could manipulate a physical transformation that might be enough to fool Jack into mistaking her for me, if only for long enough to buy me some time to get away. I knew the day he passed me on the pedestrian crossing that he was starting to move closer, and I knew his intentions could only mean me harm. Iâd done the right thing in making myself available to Anna. Part of me felt guilty for using her to save my own skin, but I couldnât see another way out. Now, knowing what I do about Carrie, that guilt has evaporated. Anna deserves everything I had planned for her. But now that sheâs met Jack, all the preparation Iâve put in place will count for nothing.
Just a couple of hours ago, I watched Anna watch me choke, waiting for me to die. I knew what she was before she came here, but only to a degree: I knew that she was obsessive, weird, infatuated with me in the same way sheâd always been since we were kids, but I hadnât known until I watched that CCTV footage at the police station that she was also a psychopath. A murderer. Tonight, I saw it with my own eyes. She would have let me choke. She would have left me to die, had something not stopped her at the last moment.
But if the past few months have taught me anything, itâs that itâs always better to keep your enemies close.
I access the app for the doorbell and go back to Monday. I skip through footage of Dominic and Freya coming and going, as well as Anna arriving home after sheâd been to the radio station to bring me lunch. Not long after this, Jack appears. Heâs wearing a cap pulled low to hide his face from the camera, but thereâs no mistaking itâs him. I turn the volume low in case Anna might be lurking outside the bathroom door, listening in. I hold the phone to my ear and hear Jack tell her he has a parcel for Siobhan Docherty. My heart plummets with the realisation that everything is over.
I listen as he asks for a signature. And then I hear Annaâs voice, so sugary sweet itâs sickly, say, âThatâs me.â
My breath escapes me. I move the phone from my ear and skip the footage back a few seconds, replaying it to make sure I havenât made a mistake. I listen to them flirt with each other. Then I hear Jack call Anna by my name.
He thinks sheâs me. Theyâre going on a date on Friday, and he thinks Anna is Siobhan.
I could cry with relief. I knew the plan was risky. I knew there was a good chance it would fail. I could never have imagined it would turn out better than I might have hoped for.
